My Day

Today was supposed to be the big grill out but it ended up being too gloomy and cold to do anything.  When I woke up this morning, I was shivering.  Even Lucy, who never sleeps with me during the summer, was cold and on my bed.  This summer really hasn’t felt like summer – especially in the temperature department.

Since the weather was crappy, some people decided not to come.  The only ones that came were Brandon, Matty, and Emily (Paige’s girlfriend) were the only ones that came.  We didn’t grill out.  Instead, we got Chinese and sat around, watching movies.  It was a nice day.  And, I didn’t even get online until everyone had left.  See how good I can be? ;-)

We really had a good time and it was nice to just hang out.  I was still in bed when Brandon and Matty showed up, and Brandon came in to chat with me.  He left poor Matty out in the living room with Taylor.  Poor guy! lol  I think she may have scarred him!

Brandon left to spend the weekend with Jenna and their parents, leaving poor Matty all alone.  I told him he could come over whenever he wanted this weekend and hang out.  I’m not sure if he will or not.  He’s kind of shy and I don’t think he feels comfortable coming over here without Brandon.  I’ve known Brandon for several years but I’ve just met Matty and I think he’s still feeling me out.   I mean, he talks my leg off but I’m still not sure if he’ll come over.  We shall see.  I just don’t want the poor guy to spend the entire weekend by himself.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit warmer and nicer. :-)

The Weekend…so far

Today I decided to get out of the house and hang out with Brandon and Matty.. I hung out with them yesterday morning and then they went to Sioux Falls to a comic book convention. I couldn’t go with because I had other things planned. Anyway, they called this morning, saying I should come see them so I did. They got me a The Simpsons graphic novel and a Stargate Atlantis comic book. I’ve been giggling over how badly drawn comic book John is.

They also might have given me illegal fireworks, too, but I can’t say if they did or not.

We ended up having lunch at Subway and decided to hang out on Thursday since Brandon is leaving that night to go to Minneapolis to see Jenna. We then went our separate ways since Matty had an appointment (he fixes computers on the side) and Brandon had to open his parents’ sports bar.

I was barely home a minute when Tyler called, asking me questions about my grill. I bought the cheapest one. Nothing fancy. Then he asked me if I would go with him to pick out one because he’s having a big party at his house on the Fourth. Then he was all, “You guys aren’t invited because it’s for Dawn’s side of the family!”. Um, all right. I had already told him I wasn’t doing anything on the Fourth. I’m not even going out to his parents’ farm for the big cookout there.

Anyway, our search started at Wal-Mart but he hated everything they had so we went to the local hardware store. Once again, he hated everything they had. Then we went to Ace Hardware and he found the one he wanted but the guy claimed they probably didn’t have any in stock and tried to sell Tyler the floor model. Tyler said no so the dude went in back and took forever to bring out one in the box. While we were waiting, I found a cute bird feeder and got it. It’s the kind you have to put together. This should be fun since I can’t put anything together, lol!

After getting the grill, Tyler decides he wants to use it tonight, which means he has to get the tank filled. We had to go to the other side of the lake to the bait and tackle shop to get it filled. While we were there, it started to downpour and it continued to rain as we came back into town. We went to his house, where Dawn proceeded to yell at him for buying a new grill. Then Tyler wanted to put it together in the rain and by that time, I was tired and just wanted to go home and eat. I told him good luck and left. I’ll have to call him in the morning to see how well it came out.

When I got home, I noticed my Doctor Who download had timed out so I had to download it agan. I wasn’t looking forward to watching the episode because Billie Piper’s acting has gotten so awful, and it was awful in this episode too. *sigh*

After watching it, I made dinner and talked to Taylor on the phone. She’ll be home Wednesday night for the weekend. She sounded a little too excited over the not illegal fireworks I might have. ;-) If you hear about a massive house fire in Iowa, that’s my house. :-P

Another day…

For the past few weeks at work, we’ve been working on rewriting the educational booklets we hand out to people about different mental illnesses. The state used to write and publish them but has since become cheap and doesn’t anymore. My boss didn’t want it to be a huge undertaking and divided us up in groups. Each group had a job to do. It worked wonderfully until yesterday, when the editing group decided to tell us they hadn’t edited everything. Oh yeah, this was an hour before my boss was going to send the final drafts off to the printer. Nice, huh? Needlessly to say, no one is happy with the editing group this morning since they’re basically holding all of us up. And the funny thing about all this is – on Friday, when we were supposed to hand everything in, the four people responsible for editing were goofing off and spent most of the day hanging around in the break room.

Anna’s soccer season is coming to a premature end next week. Everyone received letters yesterday, saying they’ve decided to start redoing the field a few weeks early. The YMCA got a grant to redo the soccer field and the baseball diamonds and they weren’t going to start until the last week of July. They didn’t explain why but promised to refund our money since it wasn’t a full season. I think this is pretty crappy since they’ve barely gotten to play any games.

When I got to work today, one of the tech guys was standing in the parking lot, having a cigarette. As a former smoker, things like that don’t bother me because he’s outside. We started talking about the statewide smoking ban that goes into effect on July 1st and how stupid and selfish it is. You can’t smoke in any public place, even if it’s outside. So, for example, you decide to go fishing along the lake, you can’t smoke. I mean, god forbid you give the fish, which are already living in polluted waters, cancer! I could get behind it if the state was doing it to help people, but they aren’t. It’s all about the money. Seriously. One of the places you can still smoke at are casinos, which make the state millions of dollars in tax revenue each year. This whole ban is going to cost the state more money than it’s worth.

Until later…

You never know until you try

This is my first blog over here.  I’ve been blogging for about four years now but on Livejournal.  I still like the other place but I needed something new; mostly to keep myself sane.  Livejournal is good for fandom things and for screwing around, but I wanted something a little more mature. I’m not sure how mature this place is but I figure I’ll figure that out while I go.

There are still a few things I need to learn over here, and I need to do a profile.  I’ve never been good at doing profiles.  We shall see how it comes out.

Today was the Iowa 250 in Newton, Iowa.  Corn 250 to be exact.  They’re really playing to the ethanol craze, yet fail to mention numerous ethanol plants in Iowa and Minnesota aren’t opening due to the market.  In Hartley, Iowa – a town about 40 miles from me – they stopped building the ethanol plant and are “waiting”.  Waiting for what, I don’t know.  And the ethanol plant that was built about 15 miles from here won’t be opening on schedule.

This makes me happy.

Yes, I know we need to burn cleaner fuels and stop depending so much on foreign oil, but ethanol is bad for the environment.  According to a recent Time article, acres and acres of rainforests are being cut down in Brazil in order to make way for corn fields.  Ethanol was supposed to protect our environment, yet it’s destroying it too.

I just read the news of George Carlin’s passing.  How sad. :(
